Fibromyalgia and Pregnancy
Fibromyalgia Affects Pregnancy (?)
Fibromyalgia, a rheumatic condition which is commonly considered as musculoskeletal disorder has been broadly known as a medical disorder, not a disease. Most people know that Fibromyalgia happens on women more than men. It is true because researches show that fact undoubtedly. However, only few people recognize the correlation between Fibromyalgia and one of the most precious moments in women’s life: pregnancy.
Pregnancy often triggers fatigue, pain, stress, and other symptoms. Uniquely, some of these symptoms are similar to the ones which are brought by Fibromyalgia. As we know, someone can be diagnosed of suffering from Fibromyalgia when he/she feels spreading pain, fatigue, sleeping disorders, and many other symptoms. Hence, the Fibromyalgia symptoms are often mistreated as part of normal pregnancy. On the third months of pregnancy, women generally feel fatigue and nausea. These are what people frequently misunderstand about.
Fibromyalgia Vs Pregnancy
Pregnant women may find that pregnancy is a period when they will have a hard time. Fibromyalgia makes it even worse. Studies show that women living with fibromyalgia and pregnancy will experience more severe pain, fatigue, and also stress; especially during the first three months of pregnancy. This is because the symptoms are doubled: the same symptom from two different sources.
On the other hand, what happens to pregnant women can trigger Fibromyalgia to come. We all know that being pregnant sometimes causes stress for the women. It is quite hard to think everything about the baby as well as to think about themselves during pregnancy; even imagining how they will give birth is also stressful. As a matter of fact, whether a woman is pregnant or not, stress has been known as one of the causes of Fibromyalgia; despite the fact that exact cause of Fibromyalgia is still a controversy. As pregnancy is closely related to stress and hormone changes, there is a greater possibility that pregnant women without Fibromyalgia may be attacked by this rheumatic condition. Meanwhile, for those who are already engaged to Fibromyalgia, it is possible that they will suffer more pain and other uncomfortable conditions during their time of fibromyalgia and pregnancy.
On the contrary, there are also studies conveying that pregnancy will give solution for Fibromyalgia. During pregnancy, the women body will produce hormone called relaxin. This positive hormone functions as pain killer in Fibromyalgia. Many people believe that supplement made from relaxin is one of the solutions to cure Fibromyalgia. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that pregnancy will not only make Fibromyalgia worse, but it can relieve the pain.
Medications and Treatments
How Fibromyalgia affects pregnancy or vice versa surely depends on how well pregnant women manage both of them. If they manage Fibromyalgia and pregnancy symptoms well; for example they can retard and prevent stressful condition; Fibromyalgia should not be very bad nightmare for them.
No medication for Fibromyalgia which is absolutely safe for pregnant women. Antidepressants and painkillers for resolving Fibromyalgia are not recommended for them. The doctors generally will ask them to stop using such medicine once they are diagnosed pregnant. Nonetheless, they will be required to consult the doctor about it.
For pregnant women with Fibromyalgia, they may try some safe treatments like meditation, massage, yoga, or exercises, instead of using medicines. Followed by enough time to take a rest, these treatments will help them to stay healthy and strong. Moreover, they should gain support from their close family, friends, and the doctors so that they can stay away from uncomfortable syndrome of fibromyalgia and pregnancy.
Indeed, for women who are not pregnant yet, having sufficient knowledge of fibromyalgia and pregnancy is highly recommended in order that they will be able to pass the hard time during pregnancy. In addition, if they suffer from Fibromyalgia, it is better to cure the rheumatic condition before pregnancy comes.
